About Department
Over the last two decades, the global development discourse has undergone a profound transformation, shifting from a narrow focus on economic growth to a deeper and more complex understanding of human well-being and quality of life. This broader perspective emphasizes multidimensional progress, encompassing social equity, environmental sustainability, and participatory governance. Across the world, non-state actors such as NGOs, international donors, civil society organizations, and media have become significant in shaping development policies and practices, working alongside communities to address inequalities and to promote inclusive growth. In India, this paradigm shift has been particularly transformative, as development strategies increasingly emphasize grassroots engagement and localized solutions. The active involvement of NGOs, self-help groups, and community-based organizations has complemented government efforts, addressing challenges like poverty alleviation, education, healthcare, and gender equality. Indian civil society’s vibrant participation, coupled with an expanding digital landscape, has further accelerated this inclusive approach, reshaping the nation’s development trajectory.
These transformative shifts in global and Indian development paradigms witnessed the critical importance of academic institutions in promoting expertise and innovative solutions to address complex development challenges. the Department of Development Studies at Gurugram University as an emerging academic unit, with its immense potential, will contribute to the evolving discourse on development in India, specifically considering the state of Haryana.
