Department of Bio-Sciences

About Department

All the South Asian countries, including India, have been grappling with various environmental challenges such as air, water, and soil pollution, overexploitation of natural resources, deforestation, loss of biodiversity, climate change-induced natural calamities, and extreme events. Over the last three decades, humans have relentlessly exploited environmental resources. Protecting the environment from degradation is crucial for sustaining life on Earth's surface. Conservation, preservation, and management of natural resources have recently garnered not only national but also international attention. The concept of establishing a Department of Environmental Science at Gurugram University emerged in 2022, spurred by voices echoing concerns about environmental degradation during the latter part of the 20 th century. This notion has evolved into a burgeoning repository of knowledge, fostering professionalism and excellence.

The Department of Environmental Sciences was inaugurated in 2023 by offering two year M.Sc. degree to students, with objectives focused on the sustainable use of natural resources and nature-based solutions (NBS), aimed at addressing regional, national, and global environmental, ecological, and earth systems-related issues. The Department has been actively promoting excellent teaching and community-oriented extension activities in environmental sciences as part of its state and national mandates.

The Department aims to provide specialized training to students capable of addressing emerging environmental challenges faced by industries and society, bridging both technological and environmental realms. With a team of well-qualified faculty and adequate facilities, including one professor, two assistant professors, one visiting faculty and administrative staff, the Department covers diverse fields of specialization, including environmental geoscience, remote sensing & GIS, water resources systems, environmental modeling and management, environmental ecology and biodiversity, environmental microbiology & biotechnology, environmental impact assessment (EIA), environmental chemistry, green technology, statistics, applied geology, pollution control technologies, natural resource management, and disaster mitigation and management.

To offer policy insights and professional guidance to governmental bodies and NGOs, and to align its study programs with market demands, the Department aims to regularly hosts workshops, seminars, conferences, and meetings. The curriculum is designed as per NEP 2020, collaboratively with experts from academia and industries to equip students with the necessary skills for careers in environmental sciences. Furthermore, the Department in coming days aims to established memorandum of understandings (MOUs) with various research organizations/institutions working in the field of environmental science.
